José

José is nineteen and lives with his mother in Guatemala. His days go by on crowded buses and in the streets delivering food; his mother goes to church and sells sandwiches. In his free time José looks at his phone and finds temporary hook-ups. When he meets Luis he has, for the first time, something that is not only a passing thing, and it brings him both joy and trouble. Li Cheng shot the film in Guatemala, mostly with non-professional actors. The telling does not declare José's homosexuality to be the issue; poverty, his mother's religion and the noise of the city carry equal weight. The camera is in the street, on the bus, in narrow rooms. Enrique Salanic is in the lead. The film screened at the Venice Film Festival, where it won the Queer Lion.
