Journey to a Mother's Room

Celia Rico Clavellino's 2018 Spanish film follows a daughter leaving home for the first time and the mother left behind. Leonor wants to go to London; her mother Estrella does not oppose it but does not know how to fill the space. The film takes place almost entirely between these two women in a small house. The story does not construct the separation as conflict: there are no arguments and no accusations, only things that cannot be said. Lola Dueñas's performance quietly carries a mother who built her life around her daughter. Rico Clavellino's method is to make movements inside the house and domestic tasks the story itself. The ending is not a resolution but a sign of continuation. Who it's for: viewers who like Spanish independent cinema and quiet drama about mothers and daughters. Who it's not for: anyone wanting plot and a dramatic peak, or who will find the slow pace wearing.
