July 1939. Twelve-year-old Donn Fendler is on the summit of Katahdin, the highest mountain in Maine, with his father and brothers; tired of waiting for them, he sets off back to camp alone. Fog comes down, the path disappears, he falls down an embankment, and he is left alone in the emptiness of the mountain. He was found nine days later and his account was published as a book the same year. Some summaries put the time lost at nearly two weeks; the recorded figure is nine days. It is sold as a family film, but it shows a small boy's days of hunger and fear.
