What Judy Berlin Is About
Judy Berlin is a young woman who wants to be an actress and whose optimism does not fit the small suburban community she lives in. When a solar eclipse throws its shadow over the town, the people there begin to look for solace and understanding in themselves and in one another: a lonely housewife, a worn out schoolteacher, a filmmaker who cannot get going. The film sets its events inside a single day and uses the eclipse as a pretext. The account solves nobody’s life; it only gives everyone an opening in which to speak. The black and white photography makes the suburb stop being familiar. Old age and forgetting stand quietly inside the story too. Edie Falco and Barbara Barrie appear in Eric Mendelsohn’s ninety three minute American film, completed in 1999.
