What Junk Mail Is About
Pål Sletaune's 1997 Norwegian film follows Roy, a postman in Oslo who opens the mail he delivers, lets himself into other people's lives uninvited and can barely stand his own. One day he uses a set of keys he has taken to get into a woman's flat, and works out that she has been pushed into covering up a crime and is holding money for a local gangster. Nothing Roy does improves anything; it only opens a hole under his own feet. A first feature that puts black comedy and thriller in the same pot and draws a narrow, grubby Oslo. It won the Amanda for best Norwegian film and was the country's official Oscar submission, though it did not reach the nominations.
