What Juvenile Offender Is About
Ji-gu is sixteen, on probation, and lives with the only relative he has, a grandfather confined to bed by an advanced illness. Caught after a burglary with boys from the neighbourhood, he stands in court with no parent to speak for him and the judge sends him to a reformatory. There the mother he believed dead, Hyo-seung, appears; she had him when she was very young herself. The two try to make up the time they lost, but neither of them was ever taught how to be a mother or a son, and the distance between them does not close. The film gives the boy not through his crime but through the emptiness behind it. Lee Jung-hyun and Seo Young-joo appear in Kang Yi-kwan’s hundred and seven minute Korean film, completed in 2012.
