What Kalushi: The Story of Solomon Mahlangu Is About
Solomon Mahlangu is a schoolboy hawking goods in the streets of Mamelodi. After the events of the sixteenth of June he joins the military wing of the African National Congress to fight the harsh oppression of the apartheid regime, and in time becomes one of the icons of South Africa’s liberation struggle. The film takes his life together with the period he lived in. The account chooses to tell how a young man came to that point, without the language of heroism. The daily form of the oppression is given through school, street and detention. Pearl Thusi and Jafta Mamabolo appear in Mandla Dube’s hundred and seven minute South African film, completed in 2017.
