In 1988 whether Pinochet stays in power is put to a referendum in Chile. The opposition is given fifteen minutes of television a night, and an advertising man is brought in to build the campaign. His proposal causes argument: rather than recount the torture and the disappeared, sell happiness, run it like a soft drink advertisement. The film does not settle whether that was morally right; the narrative only shows that it worked, and the discomfort stays there. Pablo Larrain directed, with Gael Garcia Bernal in the lead. It was shot on video cameras of the period, so the archive footage cannot be told apart from the staged scenes. It was nominated for the foreign film Academy Award. Who it's for: those who like drama built on political history and media. Who it's not for: viewers expecting image quality; the low resolution and artefacts are deliberately kept.
