On 5 August 2010 the San José gold and copper mine in Chile collapsed and thirty-three men were trapped seven hundred metres underground. For seventeen days nobody above even knew they were alive. They had a few days of food and had to stretch it across sixty-nine. The film follows the group below, the families at the surface and the rescue effort. Patricia Riggen directed. Antonio Banderas plays Mario Sepúlveda, with Rodrigo Santoro, Juliette Binoche and James Brolin in the cast. Before shooting, Riggen met each of the real miners separately and heard their accounts from them directly. The rescued men also took part in the production during filming in Copiapó. James Horner wrote the score. He came onto the film in October 2014, and it was one of two he completed before his death on 22 June 2015. Who it is for: viewers who like true-story survival. Who it is not for: anyone expecting Chile in its own voice. The film was made in English with an international cast, a choice that was criticised there.
