Miracles from Heaven

Anna, a daughter of the Beam family in Texas, is diagnosed with intestinal pseudo-obstruction, a chronic condition with no cure. One day she falls from a tree and describes seeing something as it happened. Afterwards the illness recedes. Patricia Riggen directed, from Christy Beam's memoir. Jennifer Garner plays the mother and Kylie Rogers plays Anna, with Queen Latifah in the cast. On a 14 million dollar budget it grossed around 74 million worldwide, finishing third on its opening weekend. The gap between critics and audiences is wide. Rotten Tomatoes sits at 45 percent, the consensus saying it does not get past a faith-based drama preaching to the choir. Audiences gave it an A plus CinemaScore, and Garner's performance was widely praised. It won the Teen Choice Award for drama and the MovieGuide Award for Best Movie for Families, with a People's Choice nomination. Who it is for: viewers who like faith-based drama and stories about illness. Who it is not for: anyone sceptical of the claim at its centre. The film attributes the recovery directly to a miracle and looks for no other explanation.
