What Machuca Is About
Santiago, 1973. Under the Allende government, the priest running a Catholic private school brings children from the poor neighbourhoods into the classrooms on scholarships. One of them is Pedro Machuca, whose mother cleans the house of the well off Gonzalo. The two boys become friends and two separate Chiles touch, but the adults cannot sustain the arrangement, and when Pinochet’s coup arrives all of it is erased. Andrés Wood tells the political rupture from the height of two children.
