Alfredo Castro

Between two films Jonathan Romney measures an escalation in Alfredo Castro. As the sociopath disco king of Tony Manero he is uniquely hair-raising; in Post Mortem he is stranger still, thin to the point of resembling a newly exhumed corpse or a morbidly floppy marionette, lank hair falling over a usually expressionless face. An earlier archive text calls his Raúl in Tony Manero one of recent cinema's most uncomfortable and insistently unlovable figures, and gives his identity away from the screen as well: a leading Chilean stage actor and director, associated with the work of playwrights like Sarah Kane and Heiner Müller.
