What My Tender Matador Is About
My Tender Matador (original title Tengo miedo torero), directed by Rodrigo Sepúlveda and adapted from Pedro Lemebel's 2001 novel of the same name, is a Chilean film that had its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival on September 3, 2020. It follows La Loca del Frente, a poor and marginalized trans character played by Alfredo Castro, and her relationship with Carlos, a young exiled Mexican guerrilla fighter, in a Santiago gripped by protests against the Pinochet dictatorship and military repression. The film brings together elements of harsh violence, childhood anecdotes, and rural Chilean landscapes with a struggle for sexual and political freedom. Who it's for: anyone curious about an LGBT drama set during the Pinochet era in Chile, following a trans character's relationship with an exiled guerrilla fighter, which premiered at Venice. Who it's not for: viewers looking for an apolitical, purely personal love story, since the film is directly grounded in a dictatorship era.
