Emre Erdoğdu's 2017 Turkish film follows Müzeyyen, twenty-two, in Antalya. She is in her final year of school but has no connection left to it; she spends her days with friends in the same position and drug use sits at the centre of her life. Over the winter break her brother Ali, whom she has not seen for a long time, comes to visit. The visit saves no one; the narrative does not build the sibling bond as a solution and questions what either of them can give the other. Hazar Ergüçlü leads. The camera is handheld and the scenes long, with playing close to improvised. Erdoğdu shows young life in Turkey's provincial cities without decoration and builds no plot. Who it's for: those who follow Turkish independent cinema and realist narratives of youth. Who it's not for: viewers for whom drug use and violence would sit heavily; the film shows them directly.
