Kettiyollaanu Ente Maalakha

Nissam Basheer's 2019 Malayalam film follows Sleevachan, a farmer married through an arrangement. He does not know what marriage means; in the first nights his approach to his wife is frightening and the relationship is damaged from the start. The subject is learning what consent is. Sleevachan realises late that what he did was wrong; the narrative builds this not as a criminal case but as a man learning on his own something nobody taught him, and it also shows Rincy's own decision. Asif Ali and Veena Nandakumar lead. The tone is calm and the humour everyday; rural life is shown in detail. The film was argued over for its handling of the subject and drew criticism for not giving enough room to the woman's point of view. Who it's for: those who follow realist Malayalam family drama. Who it's not for: viewers for whom sexual violence within marriage would sit heavily; the film takes it as a direct subject.
