What Khuda Gawah Is About
Baadshah Khan falls in love with Benazir, a member of a rival clan who has beaten him at buzkashi. She sets a condition: he is to bring back from India the head of Habibullah, the man who killed her father. He manages it, but has to return to India, and the two are tragically separated. The knot is only untied years later with the arrival of his daughter Mehndi. Mukul Anand shot the film over eighteen days in and around Kabul and Mazar-i-Sharif in 1991, with security provided by the Afghan air force, because the president of the day, Najibullah, was an admirer of Amitabh Bachchan. It became one of the most watched Indian films in Afghanistan.
