What King Cohen: The Wild World of Filmmaker Larry Cohen Is About
Steve Mitchell's 2018 documentary is about the writer and director Larry Cohen. Cohen began writing for television and then made his own way with low-budget genre films; his working method rested on shooting in the street without permission. Those accounts are the liveliest part of the documentary. Cohen describes filming in the middle of crowds, unlicensed and on the run; the people who worked with him remember the same events differently, and the film leaves the contradictions unreconciled. Martin Scorsese, J.J. Abrams and others speak. The narrative treats Cohen's films through their social content, weighing his work on race, religion and consumption inside the genre form. Who it's for: those curious about the history of genre cinema and the conditions of independent production. Who it's not for: people who have never seen a Cohen film; the documentary proceeds through constant clips.
