Born in 1555, Naresuan was taken as a child hostage to Hongsawadee by the Burmese king Bayinnaung, who wanted the vassal kingdom of Ayutthaya kept obedient. This first film in the series covers that childhood: a hostage boy growing up in the court of his captors, and everything he learns there turning eventually into the threat they feared. Chatrichalerm Yukol made the six-film cycle on a combined budget of seven hundred million baht, the largest Thai production since his own Suriyothai in 2001. History is staged here as a nation’s founding story, and not from any great distance.
