Zhao Jun W Wang Naixun Q Qing Han S Si Chao B Bowen Geng L Long Yi What King of Peking Is About
As the market for home entertainment grows in Beijing in the nineties, a travelling projectionist who has lost his work sets up a business copying films illegally. He draws his young son into it as well; father and son copy, package and sell together. Easy money brings its own price, and as the business goes on the relationship between the two comes under strain. The film neither glorifies piracy nor gives it as a simple crime; it speaks of a period when cinema was changing hands and of what a father becomes in the eyes of his son. The account sets the comic scenes beside the sad ones. Zhao Jun and Wang Naixun appear in Sam Voutas’s eighty eight minute Chinese film, completed in 2017.
