What King Thrushbeard Is About
The beautiful but exceedingly haughty princess Anna turns down every suitor who comes to her, with an insult each time. When the king of the neighbouring country sees this treatment, he makes an arrangement with her father: the princess is married to him in the disguise of a beggar, and is expected to learn humility and compassion inside poverty. Miloslav Luther adapted the Brothers Grimm tale as a Czechoslovak and West German co-production. Adriana Tarábková plays the princess and Lukáš Vaculík the king, and Maria Schell voiced the queen in the German version. The premise of the tale, the idea of teaching a woman a lesson, sits uneasily now; the film tells it without softening, staying faithful to the fairy-tale tradition of its time.
