What Princes and Princesses Is About
Two young people and an elderly projectionist meet in a closed cinema and invent and act out a tale every evening, and the film consists of six separate shorts. Michel Ocelot made them all in silhouette, with black figures against coloured backgrounds. The constraint is a style rather than a poverty and the result is extremely elegant. The stories range from Egypt to Japan and from the middle ages to the future, each bending the classic fairy tale slightly out of shape.
