What The Cat Returns Is About
The Cat Returns (2002) starts with a rescue. Haru pulls a cat out of traffic and the cat thanks her, because the cat is a prince. The next day the Cat Kingdom decides to express its gratitude by marrying her to him. The more she objects, the more she starts turning into a cat. The film grew out of the Baron, a character from Ghibli's Whisper of the Heart. There he is a statue inside a story the heroine is writing; here he takes the lead. So this is not a spin off from a supporting character so much as a sequel to a fiction inside a fiction. Hiroyuki Morita directed. It was one of the first Ghibli features helmed by someone other than Miyazaki or Takahata. By Ghibli standards it is a small film: 75 minutes, one idea, quick and light. Good for: light fantasy, cats, and anyone wanting a short way into Ghibli. Less good for: the depth of the studio's major films is not here, and it never claims to be. The characters barely develop, the ending is rushed, and the Baron's appeal comes more from his design than from anything he does.
