Kinyarwanda

A genocide took place in Rwanda in 1994. A great many people were killed within a hundred days. The film tells those days along several strands. In one there is a young Tutsi woman and a young Hutu man. The two of them love each other in the middle of it. In another there is a soldier far from her family. In another there is a priest left alone with his faith. What the film rests on is what survivors told. The Grand Mosque in Kigali became one of the places people sheltered. So did the madrassa at Nyanza. At the time the Mufti of Rwanda issued a fatwa. It forbade Muslims from taking part in the killing. Mosques became places where people were protected. Muslims and Christians, Hutu and Tutsi were inside together. The film won the audience award at Sundance in 2011. Most of the cast are Rwandan, and some of them survived the genocide. Cleophas Kabasita and Edouard Bamporiki appear in the hundred minute film, a French, Rwandan and American production Alrick Brown finished in 2011.
