Zbyszko is a young and impoverished Polish nobleman. Returning with his uncle Maćko from the war against the Teutonic Order in Lithuania, he falls in love with a girl named Danusia and swears an oath to bring her three trophies from the Teutonic knights. That oath draws them both into a reckoning that will take years. In the end the quarrel is no longer between two men: at Grunwald in 1410 the Polish and Lithuanian armies face the Order itself. Aleksander Ford directed it from Henryk Sienkiewicz's novel. It was Poland's first widescreen colour production, and fifteen thousand extras were used for the battle. It has remained one of the most widely seen films in Polish cinema.
