In 1947 Thor Heyerdahl and five companions pushed off the coast of Peru on a balsa raft and reached Polynesia a hundred and one days later. The point was to show that the Polynesian islands could have been settled from the east, from South America, rather than from the west. The documentary is cut from the footage the crew shot themselves: sharks, storms, a soaked deck, ropes going rotten. It won the Academy Award for best documentary for 1951. Heyerdahl's thesis is not accepted today; archaeology, linguistics and genetics all place Polynesian origins in island Southeast Asia. A genetic study published in 2020 did, however, point to early contact between the two regions.
