Kottayam Kunjachan

Kunjachan, a small time thug who served seven years for killing a man, comes out of prison wanting to live a decent life. First, though, he is told to leave Kottayam for somewhere his reputation has not travelled, and he moves in with Mikhel, a devout man with a family. The new house does not keep him from the trouble he wanted to leave behind, and before long he is in the middle of a family feud. The film is set in the Kottayam part of Kerala and uses the Catholic community there and its own dialect; the title role remains one of the parts Mammootty is remembered for. Dennis Joseph wrote the screenplay, and the story comes loosely from a novel by Muttathu Varkey. Innocent and Ranjini also appear in T. S. Suresh Babu’s hundred and twenty minute Malayalam film, completed in 1990.
