What Kuma: The Second Wife Is About
The film opens with Ayse’s wedding in a Turkish village. She believes she is marrying Hasan, the son of a family living in Vienna; when they arrive in the city it turns out the wedding was a front and that she has been brought in as the kuma, the second wife, of the father, Mustafa. The arrangement was made by the mother, Fatma, who knows she has cancer and does not want her husband and children left uncared for. Umut Dağ neither exposes nor excuses this; he films the strange, genuine closeness that forms between the two women. It opened the Panorama section of the 2012 Berlinale.
