The title is short for Long Island Expressway; Howie's mother died on that road and it keeps returning through the film. His father is busy with his own affairs and the boy is left to himself, burgling neighbours' houses with his friends. Breaking into the wrong house brings them to Big John, a former Marine who is sexually interested in boys. Cuesta does not normalise the relationship, and he does not let the audience settle either. Brian Cox plays him unnervingly ordinary; it is Paul Dano's first major role. Child abuse is the direct subject.
