What 12 and Holding Is About
A boy dies in a fire in a treehouse, and the three twelve-year-old friends left behind have to deal with it on their own. The withdrawn Jacob is occupied with revenge, the precocious Malee with an adult man who is her mother's patient, and the heavy-set Leonard with his own body and family. Michael Cuesta does not make childhood charming; the adults here cannot help, and the children make very serious decisions without consulting anyone. It is not an easy watch, and the Malee strand in particular is disquieting.
