What The Edge of Heaven Is About
A professor of Turkish origin living in Germany tries to find the daughter of the woman his father has taken into the house. At the same time another mother is looking for the daughter she has lost in Germany. The film brings stories spread across two countries close together while the characters keep missing each other; the narrative shows this not as accident but as the result of a system. Chapter titles announce some of the deaths in advance and the suspense is deliberately broken. Fatih Akin wrote and directed, with Nurgul Yesilcay, Tuncel Kurtiz and Hanna Schygulla. It took the screenplay prize at Cannes. A real warning: there are two deaths, sex work and political imprisonment. The narrative forgives nobody entirely.
