What Rhinegold Is About
Giwar arrives in Germany from Iraq with his family in the mid-eighties and starts at the very bottom. He rises quickly from petty crime to dealing, then a shipment goes missing and he plans a gold robbery to clear his debt with the cartel. The robbery goes wrong and he ends up in an Iraqi prison. Fatih Akin adapted this from the account of a rapper known as Xatar, so the story is real, and what follows the prison is music. The title points at Wagner, and the film is divided into something close to operatic movements.
