La Luna

Raihan Halim's 2023 Malay-language film is set in a conservative town. A lingerie shop opens there and the order is shaken. The women go to the shop first in secret, then openly. The town's religious leader is set on closing it; the film does not reduce the argument to a crude opposition and lets both sides state their case. Sharifah Amani and Shaheizy Sam lead. The tone is largely comic, with colour and staging used broadly. Its release was disputed in some countries. Who it's for: those who like Southeast Asian comedy and social satire. Who it's not for: viewers uncomfortable with religious sensibilities being made a subject of humour.
