In 1893, with an Indian village crushed by drought, the British garrison commander proposes a wager: win a cricket match and the tax is lifted for three years, lose and it triples. The villagers do not know the game. The film pours the whole colonial relationship into the rules of that match; while assembling the team the narrative takes on caste directly, and makes the inclusion of an untouchable player its real turning point. Aamir Khan stars and produced. It runs close to four hours, the last of which is almost entirely the match. It was nominated for the foreign film Academy Award.
