Lake George

Jeffrey Reiner's 2024 American film follows an accountant just out of prison, sent off on one last task by his old boss: to silence the boss's girlfriend. The man is used to working with numbers; this is not something he can do, and she sees that at once. From that point the film turns into a road movie and the negotiation between the two becomes the real subject. The interplay between Shea Whigham and Carrie Coon carries it; both work without saying much. The story is small in scale and draws its tension from uncertainty rather than violence. The final section moves a little too close to genre expectation. Who it's for: viewers who like small-scale crime films and performance-driven stories. Who it's not for: anyone wanting action, or who will find a slow pace wearing.
