In Bruges

Martin McDonagh's 2008 film follows two hitmen sent to hide in Belgium after a job. They have nothing to do but wait in the city. One of them cannot live with his guilt. The film builds comedy on top of a heavy subject; the narrative makes the city almost a third character and ties its close hard. Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleeson lead. It is the director's first feature and was nominated for its screenplay. The dialogue is deliberately crude and offensive. Who it's for: those who like black humour and dialogue-driven films. Who it's not for: viewers for whom suicide is close to home; the film treats it directly.
