Land

Land (2021) is Robin Wright's first film as director, and she also plays the lead. The film withholds what happened to Edee for a long time. We only see that she cannot bear it. She leaves her phone behind, sells her car, and moves into a cabin in the Wyoming mountains with no electricity. She does not know how to survive out there and has no intention of learning. The first half is close to wordless. Then a hunter, Miguel, finds her near death. What follows is a relationship two strangers build largely without discussing it. Wright explains very little, which is the right call. The loss is neither stated nor dramatised. Only its weight is present. It runs 89 minutes. The landscape is the second character and it was genuinely shot in Wyoming. Some viewers find the final section too easy, and that criticism is not unfounded. Good for: quiet drama, wilderness survival, and films about grief. It may be useful to someone going through something. Less good for: suicidal thinking sits at the centre of it. Anyone wanting incident or pace will not find it. Almost nothing happens here.
