Le Combat dans l'île

Clément is the son of a wealthy industrialist. On the face of it he works in his father's company; in fact he belongs to a far-right organisation and has a bazooka. He attempts to assassinate a politician and fails. Then his own organisation gives him up. With his wife Anne he leaves Paris for the country house of his childhood friend Paul. Paul is a printer and is against violence. Clément goes off to look for the organisation, Anne stays, and something starts between her and Paul. When Clément comes back he wants a reckoning with both of them. Alain Cavalier directs the French film; a hundred and four minutes, with Romy Schneider as Anne, Jean-Louis Trintignant as Clément and Henri Serre as Paul. It is Cavalier's first film, produced by Louis Malle. It was made while the Algerian war was still going on, and is one of the few French films to take the far right head on.
