What Leberkäsjunkie Is About
There is a baby in Franz Eberhofer's house. No sleep, nappies, shouting. In the village a fire breaks out and the house that burned was not empty. Franz runs the investigation with half his mind at home. He is also going to the doctor; there is trouble with his heart and the doctor puts him on a diet. His favourite thing is the fried meat loaf his grandmother makes, and it is now forbidden. The investigation goes on, Rudi is involved again, and everyone in the village knows something. Ed Herzog directs. The film is the sixth in the Eberhofer series adapted from the novels of Rita Falk. Sebastian Bezzel, Simon Schwarz, Lisa Maria Potthoff and Enzi Fuchs are in the cast. It is a German production. The film opened in Germany in 2019 and kept the series' wide audience. Every film in the run is named after a dish, and here the name is directly inside the story. The matter it treats is middle age; health, sleeplessness and fatherhood are as much in the narrative as the murder file. The narrative uses a thick Bavarian dialect and most of the humour comes out of the language. The family scenes work apart from the main story and turn at the same rhythm as always. The detective solution is simple and the film does not try to build suspense. The narrative assumes its own audience; the characters arrive from the earlier films. The ending puts everything back in place. Its limit is context; the relationships are confusing to anyone new to the series and the humour weakens in translation. Who it is for: viewers who like German provincial comedy and following a series. Who it is not for: the humour is local, the plot loose, and the ending light.
