What Legend of the Galactic Heroes: My Conquest Is the Sea of Stars Is About
Adapted from Yoshiki Tanaka's novels, this 1988 film is the first door into the enormous Legend of the Galactic Heroes universe. Two powers, the Galactic Empire and the Free Planets Alliance, have been grinding through a hundred and fifty years of war neither can win. The film covers the battle where the Imperial nobleman Reinhard von Lohengramm and the Alliance officer Yang Wen-li face each other for the first time. Under Noboru Ishiguro, the fighting is staged less like space opera than like naval warfare: lines, flanking manoeuvres, fleets advancing under classical music. At roughly an hour it spends almost no time explaining who anyone is, and functions as a front porch for the hundred and ten episode OVA series that followed. Who it's for: viewers who enjoy military strategy on screen and don't mind stepping into a long-running science fiction world. Who it's not for: anyone wanting a self-contained film with an ending; this is an opening, not a whole.
