What Lemonade Is About
Mara is a Romanian nurse who has come to the United States on a temporary work permit. She marries Daniel, whom she met while working as a carer there, and her small son Dragos joins her. Everything looks as though it has fallen into place. But the green card process jams unexpectedly, and Mara is left alone to deal with people who each want something from her. This is Ioana Uricaru's first feature and screened at the Berlin Film Festival. The film tells the immigration process not as a story of bureaucracy but as a relation of power: at every desk in front of her there is pressure somebody can apply. The telling does not make Mara faultless and offers no easy way out. Mălina Manovici takes the lead.
