What Lenny Bruce: Swear to Tell the Truth Is About
The documentary tells the rise of the comedian Lenny Bruce, beginning in 1948 when he was a club comic nobody knew. In 1961 everything changes: he is arrested over the words he used on stage, and a series of obscenity trials follows. The film brings together his recordings, his performances and the court material, with narration by Robert De Niro. The account neither declares Bruce a saint nor gives him merely as a victim; its subject is where speech comes to be counted a crime. The recordings themselves are the film’s real material, and long passages of the performances are left uncut. The account does not turn the detail of the trials into a lesson in law; it shows what was being argued about in court. Robert B. Weide’s hundred minute American documentary was completed in 1998.
