What L'été en pente douce Is About
When his mother dies, Fane inherits the family house and the land it sits on and comes back to town, bringing his girlfriend Lilas with him and finding his brother Mo, who has a learning disability, still in the house. To the town, the three of them together are something to talk about. A grasping garage owner wants the land to expand onto, and when he cannot buy it he turns the town against them. Gérard Krawczyk draws eighties provincial France as hot, dusty and thick with gossip. The film keeps sliding between comedy and cruelty and never settles into either. Jacques Villeret, Jean-Pierre Bacri and Pauline Lafont star; Lafont died not long after it was made.
