What Letter Never Sent Is About
Four geologists are searching for diamonds in the Siberian forest. After months they find the deposit, and the map has to be got back to Moscow. On the day they set out the forest catches fire and the four are left inside it. Kalatozov's film works through image rather than story: Sergei Urusevsky's handheld camera records how small a person is inside fire, smoke and snow. The same pair had made The Cranes Are Flying. It drew little attention on release and was restored and rediscovered much later. The despair is heavy and the ending offers no comfort.
