What Letters from War Is About
In 1971 the life of António Lobo Antunes is broken off abruptly when he is drafted into the Portuguese army and sent as a doctor to one of the worst areas of the colonial war, the east of Angola. Far from everything he loves and inside a setting that grows steadily more violent, he writes letters to his wife. As he moves between military posts he becomes attached to Africa and matures politically, while around him an entire generation counts the days until going home. In the uncertainty of the war the letters are the one thing keeping him upright. Ivo M. Ferreira’s hundred and five minute Portuguese film starts from those letters, and its black and white images present the war not as a landscape but as a distance.
