What Life and a Day Is About

Life and a Day was Iranian director Saeed Roustaee's debut feature as writer and director, following a poor family bracing for how they'll cope once their youngest daughter marries and leaves. It premiered at the 2016 Fajr Film Festival, where it won Roustaee two Crystal Simorgh awards, for Best Director and Best Screenplay, marking the first major recognition for a filmmaker who would later become internationally known for films like Leila's Brothers. Who it's for: anyone drawn to Iranian cinema that treats family financial pressure and sibling responsibility with unhurried realism. Who it's not for: viewers wanting a fast moving plot, since the film settles slowly and patiently into the family's internal dynamics.
