What Under the Shadow Is About
Babak Anvari's 2016 film follows a mother and daughter in Tehran in the nineteen-eighties. The city is under missile attack. A missile hits their building. The film does not separate the fear of war from supernatural fear; the narrative also makes the woman being barred from finishing her medical studies its real subject. It was shot in Persian. It was filmed in Jordan. Britain submitted it for the Academy Award. Who it's for: those who like horror with social ground. Who it's not for: viewers expecting frequent scares; the film builds slowly.
