What Light in the Piazza Is About
Meg Johnson is travelling in Italy with her daughter Clara. Clara is twenty six and beautiful, and an accident at the age of ten left her mentally at the level of a child. In Rome they meet young Fabrizio Naccarelli, who falls for her and does not at first understand. Meg begins to think her daughter could be happy in a world where being lovely is enough, and the real tension of the film is whether the mother will stay quiet. Guy Green shot it in 1962 from Elizabeth Spencer's novella, with Olivia de Havilland as the mother and Yvette Mimieux as Clara. Our record never names Clara's condition.
