Loft

Five friends rent a flat between them for meetings their wives do not know about. One morning they find a dead woman they do not recognise inside, and only the five of them have keys. The film does not hand the investigation to the police; the five interrogate each other in the room, and the narrative shows in flashback what each of them is hiding. The subject is not the murder but that none of them really knows the others. Erik Van Looy directed. It drew extraordinary audiences in Belgium, and he remade the same story first in the Netherlands and then in America. A real warning: the film shows violence against women and explicit sexual material directly, and how the characters regard women is uncomfortable throughout, deliberately so.
