Lokah Chapter 1: Chandra

Chandra has just moved to Bangalore: quiet, guarded, out at night. A young neighbour becomes interested in her, and the more he digs the clearer it becomes that she is not human. Dominic Arun draws on Kerala's own mythology and builds the superhero template on local legend rather than on American comics. Kalyani Priyadarshan leads, and the film became a threshold for female-led Indian production: made for around thirty crore, it passed three hundred, became the highest-grossing Malayalam film ever and the first from that industry over the three hundred crore mark. The chapter number in the title states the intention plainly. Who it is for: viewers who like Indian fantasy and superhero stories grounded in local myth. Who it is not for: anyone wanting a closed story, since a continuation is openly promised.
