What Long Live the Queen Is About
Eight-year-old Sara is taught the rules of chess by a friend and is quickly taken over by the game. Her imagination is strong enough that she believes the white pieces, the king and queen above all, are the ones teaching her, and the film sets that invented world beside the real one and tells them together. As Sara learns the game she both improves at chess and finds a way towards the father she has lost, until she is good enough to play a grandmaster in a simultaneous exhibition. Esmé Lammers wrote and directed it and dedicated it to her grandfather, the world champion Max Euwe. It won the Dutch Golden Calf for best feature and was submitted for the foreign-language Oscar, though it was not nominated.
